The Hong Kong Border Crossing Facility Reclamation extends east from the Chek Lap Kok Airport with highway connections to north Lantau and Tuen Mun. 130 Hectares of additional space has been formed to accommodate the non-dredge reclamation, formed using this technique to reduce environmental impact. After placing the reclamation tapered stone columns were installed using vibro-replacement techniques.
Approximately 500 No. marine Cone Penetration Tests were carried out prior to and after the stone column installation to verify the success of the strength gain from the stone column installation. The CPTs penetrated the offshore soft marine deposits overlying the stiffer underlying Alluvium to a maximum depth of about 25m below sea bed level. Actual and idealized records showing strength improvements are presented below.
