SUKI
2024 Spring Intern (Env. Div)
During my internship at LAM Environmental Services, I had the opportunity to work as part of the environment team, where we were responsible for conducting weekly environmental monitoring and audits during the construction period. The purpose of the inspection is to ensure there are no environmental impacts during the construction and should be aligned with the restriction of the EIA throughout the project. For auditing, we focused on parameters such as noise, water, and air, each with its specific indicators. This involved deploying monitoring equipment, collecting samples, and conducting measurements. We then assessed the results to evaluate whether the data exceeded restricted levels and ensured that the construction work did not negatively impact on these parameters or sensitive receivers.
This internship has been a transformative experience for me. It provided a platform to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios and allowed me to develop critical skills in project management, research, and data analysis. In addition, I gained hands-on experience in conducting environmental monitoring and learned how to interpret and evaluate data to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the LAM Environmental Services team for providing me with this invaluable opportunity and I am excited to build upon the foundation I have gained here as I continue my journey towards a career focused on environmental sustainability.

Intern 2023 (G.I. Div)
This 8-week internship program provides us with meaningful experience in the contractor industry in the ground investigation field. We learn much about geologists and GFT duties through the practical site work.
In these 8 weeks, we went to different sites, including marine-based and land-based investigations. We observed the drilling process and acquired much practical knowledge from the sophisticated workers and site staff. Also, we have a golden opportunity to observe and try the vane shear test in the marine G.I. By participating in the large Tung Chung Line Extension Project, we know more about the cooperation on site and the structure of this industry. Other than the sitework, paperwork is also essential for geologists. We were honored to try the software GINT. It integrates the daily report from the site workers and the logging sheet from the geologists. The reports generated are well organized, with proper indication of special features and rock types, which helps the consultant to read later.
We not only gained precious site experience from LAM but also met professional and passionate staff here. They were very proactive in delivering the details of techniques required for this industry. They also shared their experience in this industry which helps our future career planning. Therefore, we were very thankful to have this valuable internship experience in LAM.

Lam Environmental Services has provided us with valuable experiences throughout the summer internship programme. For environmental monitoring, we tried various sampling techniques to monitor environmental parameters such as air, noise and water. Attending site inspection allows us to check if relevant mitigation measures have been implemented accordingly to minimize the environmental impacts to the surrounding environment. By assisting in tree surveys, we learnt how to identify tree species and carry out tree assessment in the proposed project sites.
Tree surveys and traffic counts were some of the unforgettable memories that we have done this year, we have gained practical skills in ecological field surveys and a better understanding of the traffic conditions of Island Eastern Corridor. All in all, the eight-week internship was both eye-opening and unique for both of us, which enlightened our learning of environmental issues and monitoring works in Hong Kong. Big thanks must be given to the LES team for organizing such a fruitful internship experience composed of both office and fieldworks.

Our appreciation for the LES 2021 internship goes beyond the vast learning opportunities we were given in tackling the environmental issues specialized to Hong Kong. Our learning outcomes incorporated innovative designs for treating wastewater, ecological concerns for avians and stray dogs, and environmental monitoring for numerous construction projects ranging as far as Causeway Bay to Mui Wo. Mentors willingly dissected the environmental issue at hand, giving not only thoughtful instructions but also a purpose and significance to the work being done.
Furthermore, our supervisors entrusted us with the task of evaluating our office building based on BEAM Plus Assessment Criteria, from which we have gained practical insights into how the sustainability narrative is gaining momentum in the construction industry. Not to mention the time we had an exchange with Ground Investigation (G.I.) in which we observed the drilling work performed at the Aberdeen Marina Club and still reminisce about the interactions we had with the consultants and crew members there.
In the short span of eight weeks, the Internship has brought our knowledge to life, enabled us to maintain good relations with the diverse staff we worked alongside and furthered the curiosity we had brought initially starting as interns. We sincerely extend our thanks to LAM and its team for the rare and enlightening experience.

Our internship at LAM Geotechnics was truly an eye-opening experience. Our Intern Leader organized a program to such detail that our schedules were planned down to the day and we visited many various sites throughout Hong Kong. During our eight weeks with LAM, they had organized experienced site agents and GFT at each site to guide and educate us on different topics relating to geotechnical engineering and site investigation. We were lucky this summer as each site had their unique characteristics so we had the opportunity to witness many different site investigation and field test methods! In addition, we were also given the opportunity to mock-test our basic soil and rock core logging and field testing skills. It was very interesting to test what we learned at school in the real world! Every Friday afternoon, we were sent back to headquarters where our assigned mentor would lead classroom discussions and answer any technical questions we have throughout the week.
Each year, LAM interns are required to do a presentation on an assigned topic. This year our Project Manager assigned us to experiment on their new proprietary geotechnical information system. It was interesting to see how technology can impact their workflow. This was a very unique and fun experience with LAM Geotechnics and we are thankful we met new friends along the way.

Intern 2018 (G.I. Div)
We had little knowledge of the industry beyond what we studied at university. We gained a lot of experience in various parts of ground investigation works, such as marine GI, land GI, instrumentation work and preliminary site work. With helpful guidance from the our assigned mentors and supervisors, we were able to piece together all the details and see the full picture of the GI workflow. Apart from GI work, we had the opportunity to work with LAM Environmental to learn more about Environmental Impact Assessment.
Our most memorable experience was going onboard the jack-up barge LAM IX. Marine GI is much trickier and requires immense coordination and collaboration, as we have to account for other factors such as weather and tide conditions.
The staff was all very professional, experienced and knowledgeable and it was truly an eye-opening experience. We had a wonderful time with LAM. Check out our video to see what we did our summer 2018!
